![]() ![]() ![]() “The first time I talked to him he said he wanted this to be a game about Drake’s equation. Even if the initial concept would have to change and scale over the course of development. Over the entire course of development, as the team at Maxis grew from an idea in Will Wright’s head to a team of over 100 developers, every designer that touched some aspect of Spore new it was something incredible. It would eventually be recognized as a project that pioneered procedural generation that still has an active player base ten years later. Despite the failure of spore to live up to its hype, any expansions or sequels would be worth heavy consideration assuming the developers (and EA) learn their lesson from this one.The single-player sandbox god game was met with a mixture of acclaim and criticism at first after a number of fans were upset it didn’t meet the expectations set in demos shown during Will Wright’s 2005 GDC talk and various E3 showings. I would love to see this game expanded upon, as there is a lot to be capitalized. With that I will say this game has AMAZING potential. Overall Review: This game would have been 3 stars before the DRM and rootkit issues imposed by EA, and it would have been a full 5 if it lived up to its potential. 3 can come up really fast if you reformat or buy new. On top of that the draconian and unreasonable DRM restrictions put on the game essentially install a rootkit onto your computer, and the key is no good after 3 installs, which is really a lot less than it seems to be. The terraforming is also simple to the point of boredome, and can often require multiple trips due to limited cargo space. It is extremely repetitive, the missions are all essentially the same, "get this, save that, attack this." and you are VERY frequently interrupted by calls for help that cut into your efforts. ![]() The space phase, to the contrary, starts out very enjoyable but begins to drag on before too long. The whole phase feels rushed, it keeps advancing you before it should really, and as a result the most amazing phase in the game is cut drastically short. This is especially true with the creature phase. By the time you get into a rythm, it is time to move on. The creature phase is the most fun, and the space phase is also very fun especially at the beginning.Ĭons: All of the first for phases are too short. Each individual phase is enjoyable and unique, presenting its own gameplay styles and challenges. Potentially a good game after EA releases the 20 expansion packs we all know they're preparing to release. Sharing your creations/making "sporecasts" isn't intuitive, and looking for other peoples' creations is difficult with so few filters to apply. Ea Download Manager is an annoyance, hard to control the stuff you automatically download and gets inserted into your game. All the phases we saw in the previews (Tidepool, Tribal, Creature, City) were overly simplified and there just isn't a lot of stuff to bring you back for a second play-through. ![]() This game is basically the creature creator with "other junk" thoughtless thrown in around it. Overall Review: Before this game came out, EA sold the creature creator for $10. Pros: Creature creator is amazing, lots of stuff to do, colorful graphics, intuitive to learn.Ĭons: Other creators are bland, a lot of stuff is removed from what we saw in earlier demos and previews, most stuff you can do is oversimplified and boring, the "ultimate" phase, space mode, is frustrating and boring at the same time (slightly fixed in 1.1 patch since you get attacked less often), nothing to master other than the creature creator. ![]()
